Cavities in Kids (and Adults): What You Can Do Today
If you’re a parent in Grant County, chances are you’ve had at least one trip to the dentist that ended with the words, “Looks like we found a cavity.” Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children, and it doesn’t stop there. We see just as many cavities in adults too, especially those who sip coffee or soda throughout the day, or who may have missed a few dental visits during the pandemic years.
The good news? Cavities are almost always preventable, and small daily habits can make a big difference. Here are 5 important things to know about cavities and how to avoid them.
1. What Actually Causes Cavities?
Cavities form when bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars and starches from food and drinks. As they feed, they produce acid that slowly weakens enamel (the protective outer layer of your teeth). Without regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits, these weak spots become holes, or cavities, that need to be filled.
2. Sugar & Sipping Are a Big Deal
One of the biggest contributors to cavities, especially in kids, is constant snacking or sipping on sugary drinks. Juice boxes, sweet tea, soda, and even flavored waters can coat teeth in sugar and acid. The solution? Water between meals, and snacks like cheese, nuts, or apple slices instead of crackers or gummies.
3. My Favorite Part of a Child’s Visit
One of my favorite ways to end a visit with a child is to remind them that brushing twice a day for two full minutes is the secret to strong, healthy teeth. Kids respond well to structure and praise, and knowing they’re “supposed to” brush for a set amount of time gives them confidence and responsibility.
4. And Adults? You’re Not Off the Hook
To the adults, I say this, “you can brush your teeth 24 hours a day, but you’ll never brush between them, that’s why flossing is so important.” Cavities between teeth are some of the most common we find in adults. Daily flossing is quick, simple, and one of the best ways to avoid painful and costly dental problems.
5. Fluoride Helps, and So Does a Checkup
Fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen enamel and reverse early decay. If your water doesn’t contain fluoride, ask about supplements or in-office treatments. And remember, regular checkups help us catch problems early, in both kids and adults.
Tooth decay is common, but it doesn’t have to be your story. With the right habits and a little encouragement, your family can enjoy fewer fillings and more confident smiles for years to come.
Until next time, keep brushing, flossing, and smiling.
